VetFran Member Anytime Fitness Announced “Operation HeartFirst”

On September 14th, VetFran member Anytime Fitness announced “Operation HeartFirst” during its annual conference in Scottsdale, AZ,.  This new initiative is designed to help more military veterans open their own franchised gyms.  The initiative will provide veterans with a combination of funds, resources and support to help them open and operate Anytime Fitness clubs.

Anytime Fitness 3

The gyms will be similar to standard Anytime Fitness clubs, and they will be open to veteran and non-veteran members alike, but the gyms may also feature special amenities for veterans like “Rally Point” social spaces and opportunities to learn more about other veteran services.

Anytime Fitness has partnered with Derek Weida, a veteran of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, to assist with development of the initiative.  Weida served three deployments in Iraq between 2004-2007 and will begin operating an Anytime Fitness club in the very near future.

Moving forward, Anytime Fitness, which estimates that 10% of its current franchisees are vets, hopes to name at least one “Operation HeartFirst” recipient every year.  Details surrounding this exciting initiative are in the works.

One Man’s Junk is Another Vet’s Come Up

Lenny Meschino’s may need to plug his nose at times, but it has its rewards.

“We’re allowed to bring stuff home. But my wife gets mad at me if I take too much. I’ve brought home a power washer, a chain saw, a pool table and a hot tub,” Meschino said.

But his most rewarding haul was a 6-month-old puppy he rescued from a home eviction case. The dog was among the “junk” Meschino had been called to haul away, and was about to be taken away by animal control officers. He took the dog home and his daughters named it Lucky.Jdog 2

He is a JDog Junk Removal franchisee.  The franchise ownership opportunity is offered exclusively to active duty military personnel, military veterans or their family members.

Meschino, 35, was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in February 2013 and became a franchisee in August 2013. He was looking for something that would allow him a flexible schedule and time with his family.

He charges by the load to pick up people’s “junk” and haul it away in his 13-cubic-foot trailer. Prices range from $60 for a quarter of a load to $220 for a full load, and haul just about anything.

Once a load is sorted, anything recyclable is taken to a recycling facility, toxic chemicals are properly disposed of, some things are donated to charity and some things, like Lucky, a fishing pole and some bicycles, find a home with Meschino and his family.

Some days are much less pleasant.

“Sometimes it’s nasty, like cutting out carpet that has dog stuff all over it, or attic insulation with raccoon poop,” Meschino said. “You put Vicks in your nose. One time I forgot.”

But overall, he finds the business rewarding.

“I like it. I have the freedom to spend time with my family,” he said.

IFA Receives Top ASAE Award for VetFran and Operation Enduring Opportunity

The International Franchise Association (IFA) has earned the 2014 ASAE Power of A Gold Award for its Veterans Transition Franchise Program (VetFran) and Operation Enduring Opportunity (OEO) initiative.

OEO is a franchise industry-wide effort to hire and recruit 80,000 veterans, military spouses and wounded warriors through 2014.  Since Veteran’s Day 2011, there have been over 151,000 veterans who have found career opportunities in the franchise industry, with nearly 5,200 becoming small business franchise owners, significantly surpassing our goals in both of these areas.  The program is strongly-supported by the First Lady and the White House (where the IFA was honored in an East Room ceremony in April, 2013 for its ongoing and measurable efforts) Joining Forces Initiative, as well as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and their Hiring our Heroes program. ASAE honored IFA for its efforts to support our nation’s veterans, which was the largest private-sector veterans’ hiring commitment at the time of its launch.

“Franchising provides an ideal structure to enable returning veterans to become productive participants in the U.S. economy,” said IFA President & CEO Steve Caldeira, CFE. “It is expected that in the next five years, over one million military veterans will be transitioning into civilian life. The franchise industry is well- positioned to support these veterans, and while we have far surpassed our goal, we will continue our steadfast efforts to help veterans, military spouses and wounded warriors achieve their dreams of business ownership.”

IFA’s VetFran was founded in 1991 by the late Don Dwyer, Sr. (USAF, Ret.), founder and chairman of The Dwyer Group, to support veterans returning from the Gulf War to ease their transition back into the civilian economy. Today, VetFran includes over 650 IFA member companies offering financial incentives, training and mentoring to veterans interested in small business ownership and/or a career path in franchising. The program includes opportunities in employment, as well as business ownership through discounts, reduced royalties and credits for start-up materials. The Operation Enduring Opportunity campaign was launched in 2011 to support military veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

VetFran strengthened the OEO by partnering with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s “Hiring our Heroes” program, supported by Capital One Bank.

“Congratulations to IFA for benefiting not just their own industry or profession, but society at large,” said Paul Pomerantz, CAE, CEO of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and chair of the Power of A Awards Judging Committee.  “This year, our committee had an exceptionally strong group of entries to consider, and it’s heartening to see so many organizations excelling in their work.”

ASAE’s Power of A (association) Awards, recognizes the association community’s valuable contributions on the local, national, and global level. The Power of A Awards rewards outstanding accomplishments of associations and industry professionals for their efforts to enrich lives, create a competitive workforces, prepare society for the future, drive innovation and make a better world.

JDog Junk Removal Offered Exclusively to Veterans

JDog Junk Removal, a full-service junk removal franchise offered exclusively to military veterans and their family members, is expanding nationwide offering business ownership and employment opportunities for thousands of military veterans.

The company is the only U.S. franchise business devoted solely to military veterans and their families. JDog Junk Removal recently entered into a strategic partnership with Julip Run Capital, LLC, a Philadelphia-based private equity firm, to support the capital needs of the business and to help manage growth.

“We liken our business to a ‘movement’ among military personnel and their families who are seeking sustainable income opportunities as they transition into civilian life. This movement appeals to veterans who prefer to be entrepreneurs, where they can operate according to a proven business manual and maintain an active, flexible work schedule,” said Flanagan. “The foundation of the movement is built upon the core values of respect, integrity and trust – values veterans and their families relate to.”

JDog Junk Removal began franchising in 2012 and has four operating franchise locations in Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan and Texas. Additional franchise operations will be opening in the next few months in Tennessee and Missouri. JDog Management intends to leverage its capital base and upgraded management infrastructure to open locations in most major metro markets over the next five years.

Owning a JDog Junk Removal franchise is relatively affordable and can be purchased starting at $27,900, which includes the initial franchise fee and a protected territory. Ongoing franchise royalties are based on fixed monthly royalties, not based on a percentage of revenue like most other franchise brands, so franchisees realize all the benefit of growing their business. JDog will donate 10 percent of the company’s net income annually to veteran-related causes, which will be designated by individual franchisees.

7-Eleven® Increases Franchise Recruiting Incentive for Recent Military

VetFran member and recognized as “military friendly” by multiple veterans’ organizations and publications, 7-Eleven, Inc. is serious about growing its franchisee ranks with qualified military veterans. The world’s largest convenience retailer has increased its franchising-fee discount to 20 percent as an added incentive for qualified veterans who have left the service in the last five years.

Ret. U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Charles Williams, a 7-Eleven franchisee in Copperas Cove, Texas, is among veterans who have taken advantage of 7-Eleven’s franchise-fee discount for qualified military vets. His wife Theresa, a former Army transportation sergeant, will join him in franchising a second 7-Eleven store this September in Killeen.

7-Eleven will continue to offer a 10 percent franchise fee discount to all other military veterans who meet the company’s franchisee qualifications. The company first instituted the incentive for retired and separated veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces in 2009 to help them achieve the American dream of owning one’s own business.

“More than 100,000 veterans are expected to retire this year,” said Greg Franks, 7-Eleven vice president of franchise systems, “And we believe 7-Eleven offers an excellent opportunity for those who dream of owning their own business. Experience has shown us that veterans have the leadership traits, work ethic and organization skills to succeed in our business.”

7-Eleven has been recognized as a military-friendly company for its veteran hiring practices, military veterans’ franchise program and a charitable mission to support military families. Military veterans serve in every level of the company from top management to field staff to store associates.  The retailer also has supported military-assistance organizations including Hire Heroes USA, the USO, Reserve Aid, Warrior Gateway and Operation Mend.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, military personnel who served on active duty anytime since September 2001 can face greater employment challenges than civilians and older veterans. At 21 percent, the unemployment rate of the youngest of these, ages 18-24, is almost three times the national rate. With a growing number of veterans facing a difficult job market, veteran entrepreneurship offers an opportunity to start a successful business in which retired and honorably discharged service personnel can use their skills to control their financial destiny.  7-Eleven also offers careers in a variety of fields to qualified veterans.

Home Health Care Franchise Creates Exciting New VetFran Program

While some franchises offer discounts for veterans in franchising, other franchises are going above and beyond the call to action.

BrightStar Care is a member of VetFran, and a national private duty home care and medical staffing franchise announced a comprehensive program that includes significant discounts, donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, and an internal mentoring program for military veterans wanting to become BrightStar Care franchisees.

Program details include:

  • The program started July 1st, and the first five veterans that sign franchise agreements by 12/31/2014 will each receive a $10,000 franchise fee discount.
  • BrightStar Care will also donate $10,000 for each franchisee’s to the Wounded Warrior Project.
  • BrightStar Care will present each of these franchisees with special training about Veteran’s Administration (VA) benefits that cover in-home care, allowing them to offer their services to military veterans in need of in-home medical or non-medical care.
  • All military veterans who join the system will have the opportunity to participate in a special mentoring program in which new veteran franchise owner will be matched with an experienced military veteran franchisee for initial and ongoing mentoring.

“Becoming a BrightStar Care franchisee gives veterans an opportunity to continue to serve others in a valuable way,” said Shelly Sun, CEO of BrightStar Care. “Also, because senior citizen veterans make up a significant share of our client base, they can feel good about helping fellow veterans learn about VA benefits that cover in-home care and give them the quality of life they earned as our country’s heroes.”

“The belief that the bonds formed while serving together lasts a lifetime is a principle that BrightStar Care encourages,” Sun added. “With our franchise system, vets can continue to bond together as business colleagues as well as friends.”

Sean Fitzgerald, Executive Vice President of Franchise Development, is one of many who have benefited from the support provided to veterans. His father served in the military during the Vietnam War and utilized the GI Bill to help pay for his college. These funds helped him enter the business world, and later co-founded a franchise company with Sean.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have benefited from my father’s service,” said Fitzgerald. “My father is currently receiving care from a local VA hospital. If he were to require in-home care, I’m proud to say that one of our local BrightStar Care teams would explain the VA benefits that cover the services and even provide the high-quality home care he’s earned. Giving back and granting other veterans the opportunity to open their own business is something I feel extremely passionate about.”

Iraq War Veteran Opens HWY 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries

Kevin Adcock and his wife Fran decided to open a Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries in Cheraw, S.C.  Kevin, an Iraq war veteran said, “I left a pretty decent job.  We made a pretty good living.  This was kind of our whole life savings.”

“I think that Iraq made this possible for me.  When you go to a place like Iraq or Afghanistan or something like that, you do things that you don’t even know you’re capable of.  I wasn’t sure I was ready to run my own business before that, but coming back I knew that I could do things I never thought I could do,” mentioned the war vet.

He and his wife for years kicked around the idea of opening their own business.

However, it wasn’t until Kevin came back from serving in Iraq in 2009 that the idea finally hit him.

“When this came about and we actually went to what they call discovery day for Hwy 55…and we talked to the CEO of the company Kenny Moore.  He made us believe that this was the wife move for us,” he said.

Yet, the bigger picture is framed behind the counter where his young staff works.

“Part of what we are trying to do is trying to help young people from three communities.  Young people can come work here and we can help them to become better people in general,” explained Adcock.

While from the outside it’s your usual burger restaurant, you would have to stop by to see an American dream realized.

“The steady increase in veteran representation within the overall franchising community over the last several years has been extremely encouraging,” Rob Bond, founder of the World Franchising Network, said. “It certainly is clear evidence of the intrinsic values, invaluable experience learned through life’s lessons, and the exceptional work ethic of our military veterans. Hopefully, this trend will continue in the years to come so that these fine young men and women can test their skills in franchising.”

The Dwyer Group is committed to helping veterans achieve their dreams and reach their goals by being in business for themselves. The Veterans Transition Franchise Initiative (VetFran Program) was established by Don Dwyer, Sr., founder of The Dwyer Group, soon after the Gulf War ended in 1991. VetFran is a program that company members of the International Franchise Association (IFA) are encouraged to particapate in by offering business franchise opportunities and financial incentives to honorably discharged veterans.

The results were featured in the June 20, 2014 issue of USA TODAY in the Franchising Today section.

GRANITE TRANSFORMATIONS INITIATES A COMMITMENT TO HIRE VETERANS

Granite Transformations proudly announces an initiative to actively recruit returning military personnel into our franchise system. Our goal is to hire at least two veterans per franchise location, resulting in over 200 veterans hired over the next few years.

“Hiring veterans not only honors their service, but leverages their military experience and assists them in transitioning to civilian life,” said Paul Lane, COO of Granite Transformations. “They are well-trained, team-oriented, disciplined and a great asset to any organization.”

This pledge is in conjunction with Granite Transformations’ ongoing partnership with the IFA’s Vet Fran program which helps returning service members access franchise opportunities through training, financial assistance, and industry support.
